File management. Using My Computer you can manage the files on your system. The are organized in a hierarchy from broad to specific like the roots of a tree.
  • Folders: are a metaphor for file organization. The digital file system is based on a filing cabinet that everyone has experience with. A folder is a container that helps you to organize your files. Every file on your computer is stored in a folder, and folders can also hold other folders. Folders are sections of a storage devices memory that are used to organize files into categories. Each new folder is separated by a \ in a path statement.

  • File names cannot contain the following characters: \ / : * ? " < > |.

  • Extensions : are 3 or 4 letters added after a period at the end of a file name. They are usually invisible.
    • Extensions tell the computer what Icon to use.
    • Extensions tell the computer what program to load the file into.

  • Drives : The drive something is located on is called the root directory. Drives are given letters to represent them.
    • C:\ is hard drive
    • D:\ is usually a CDROM or DVD.
    • Letters are assigned as new drives are installed. Like when you plug in a USB Key (install key now)
    • Drive letters are the beginning or "root directory" of a path statement
